Group leader in functional proteomics and systems biology & Scientific director of the Proteomics Facility (ProFI) @ Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB-FORTH)
Michalis Aivaliotis is currently an Associate Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Medicine at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) and collaborative faculty member at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB-FORTH) in Heraklion (Greece), where he is a group leader in functional proteomics and systems biology and scientific director of the Proteomics Facility (ProFI).
In 2000, he received his diploma in Chemistry, and in 2003 his MSc. in Biochemistry from the University of Crete (Greece). In 2005, he obtained my PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Crete in collaboration with the University of Johann Wolfgang Goethe (Frankfurt am Main, Germany) and the research group of the pioneer in the application of mass spectrometry in protein analysis and proteomics, Prof. Dr Michael Karas.
In recognition of excellence during my PhD, he received the prestigious and highly competitive fellowships from Alexander von Humboldt foundation and Max-Planck Society for post-doctorate research in the Max Planck Institute (MPI) of Biochemistry, (Martinsried, Germany), and in the Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry of the University of Johann Wolfgang Goethe in the groups of Prof. Dr Michael Karas and the pioneer in the study of membrane proteins and membrane biochemistry, Prof. Dr Dieter Oesterhelt (2005-2008).
In 2008, he was appointed by the Foundation of Biomedical Research of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA, Athens, Greece) as senior research scientist. In 2009, he moved to IMBB-FORTH as a senior research scientist in order to participate in the organization, establishment and operation of the ProFI from scratch. In 2013, he became the manager of ProFI, and in 2017 its scientific director participating in more than 100 different research projects. In November 2016 he was elected as special research scientist and group leader in functional proteomics and systems biology at IMBB. In December 2017 he was appointed as Associate Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Medicine at AUTh.
He is currently the author or the co-author in 35 peer-reviewed research articles and 2 reviews in several scientific journals and he is reviewing for several scientific journals. He is member of eleven scientific societies (including FEBS, ACS, ASMS, ASBMB) and he has been involved in the organization of several international meetings and training workshops. Moreover, he has given many invited lectures at international and national conferences and universities.
Besides his research interests and activities, he has been intensively involved in academic teaching and students’ supervising (under- and post-graduate) for more than 10 years in the AUTh, University of Crete, MPI, Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICH), University of Ioannina etc.
